Fixing the menace of Daesh

Ayaz Ahmed

Deash has proved to be the most powerful and lethal transnational militant organization in the turmoil-stricken twenty-first-century. It has ominously wreaked insurmountable collateral damage to the energy-rich Middle East. Sadly, the divided international community has dismally failed to contain and flush out the terror outfit. It manifests that Daesh will continue to shed more widespread blood and inflict damage in the region.Historically speaking, the genesis of rampaging Daesh can be traced back to the abortive American invasion of Iraq in 2003 on the fabricated ground that late Saddam Hussein had possesses weapons of mass destruction, which he didn’t. The US constant bombings on both combatant and non-combatant in Iraq with British support planted the seed of Daesh to grow. That seed of terror was watered by the corrupt, incompetent and hand-picked Iraqi government led by Nouri al-Maliki. The Shia government with all-out Iranian assistance deprived the 42 percent of the Sunni population of political, socio-economic and educational rights.

To add insult to the injuries of the persecuted Sunnis, the notorious Black Water under US contract also systematically organized bloodshed in Iraqi cities with complete impunity. As a result, Daesh was created to take revenge and safeguard the rights of Iraqi Sunni population.

The anarchic international system coupled with the ineffectiveness of the UN has so far greatly helped Daesh expand its tentacles throughout the Middle East. Presently, the outlawed terror organization controls large swathes of territory in war-torn Iraq and Syria. The terror outfit is hell bent on expanding its terror and militancy to other turmoil-hit Middle Eastern countries. Based on some credible reports, the militant outfit has also gained some space in the terrorism-stricken Pak-Afghan region. Presently, it has the support and capability to organize attacks in any corner of the world from Indonesia to America.

Iraq and Syria along with other Middle Eastern countries are breeding grounds for Daesh’s recruitment and financial supports. The corrupt, torpid and discriminatory Iraqi government, bureaucracy and the armed forces should be prudently reformed with all-out international assistance. Both Iran and KSA should be stopped from using Iraqi soil as an ideological battlefield for their regional dominance. The four-and-half years-long Syrian civil war, western-instigated instability in Libya turmoil-stricken Yemen and western-backed military autocracy in Egypt against democratic forces should be urgently resolved and corrected. The reformed and empowered UN should impede Russia, the West and Arab countries from fishing in the troubled regional waters for military and economic objects. After ceasefire brokered by the UN, elections should be conducted under the direction and supervision of the UN in Syria.

The unbridled US and Russia must be made responsible to the UN. The failed and insidious intervention by these countries in militarily weak states such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine and Syria have already created assorted terrorist, militant, rebel groups. Both of these powers have blatantly shattered the already fragile international tranquillity to maximize their burgeoning strategic and economic interests. An international issue of any nature should be resolved by the UN rather than by Russia and America. Daesh has inflicted enough damage to the world. Now it is time to unite, reform the UN, plan practically and make the world a safer, peaceful, inclusive and conducive place to live.
